History of Minnesota Gambling

Bingo was the first game of chance legalized in Minnesota; that came in 1945. Only charities may spread bingo games. This was expanded to raffles, paddlewheels and tip boards in 1978. Pull-tabs were added in 1981.

A constitutional amendment to create a legalized horse racing industry was approved in 1982. The framework was added a year later. Off-track betting was legalized in 1989 but ruled unconstitutional in 1992. A constitutional amendment was passed in 1994 to address this but voters rejected it.

There are two tracks today in Minnesota. Canterbury Park has seen many financial problems throughout the years. The loss of simulcast betting saw the track close in 1993. It later reopened and was eventually saved by the addition of a card club, as permitted by the state legislature. Running Aces later entered this same license category. Attempts to permit slots and video poker at Minnesota racetracks have repeatedly failed.

On July 1, 2011, Canterbury Park and Running Aces were forced to temporarily cease operations. This was not due to any action of the businesses. The state legislature and governor failed to agree on a budget. This forced a government shutdown that closed the state’s gaming commission. This was resolved on July 20, 2011, and the tracks and card clubs reopened.

Tribal Casinos Start Operating

Seven Native American casinos gained approval by the state to operate slot games and video poker in 1989. This was one year after the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was passed by Congress. Blackjack was added in 1991 to the list of approved games.

The Minnesota Vikings received approval for a new stadium in 2012. One of the ways this was to be funded was by electronic pull-tabs in bars. These devices are tablets that offer games that resemble slot machines. While a small percentage of the proceeds go to charity, it was expected to raise $35 million for the stadium. The games failed miserably and did not generate any funds for the stadium. The state was forced to look elsewhere for tax money to pay for the Minnesota Vikings’ stadium.

This was a controversial project for many reasons. One is that the NFL keeps a distance from gambling. Existing gaming companies were not happy with the competition, even though it turned out not to be any threat to other forms of legalized gambling. Conservatives did not want gambling to expand to bars. The games still exist, even with the complete lack of popularity.

Safe Online Casinos Real Money

While this state doesn’t come anywhere near the displayed hostility that others face towards online gambling, Minnesota is still pretty far away from throwing an Internet-based strong competition between the many Minnesota casinos. Actually, seeing how the entire domain is based on Minnesota Indian casinos, an online licensing system has been put to question. Thus far, only a shy effort has been made in the direction of the argumentative debate related to USA internet gambling. It was rather seen as a conceptual discussion designed for a later period.

Gambling in Minnesota

The stance on this particular subject has always been one of prudence. The population didn’t seem that keen on the prospect of gambling. As proof, the first discussions about introducing pari-mutuel wagering happened in 1985. It’s also true that when the Minnesota Indian casinos started to appear, they took the state by storm. With no more than 40 Minnesota casinos opened this day, it’s obvious that they are the main players of this domain.
Following the relative calmness and conservatism of the market, Minnesota gambling laws propose a large meaning of the betting stage, but at the same time, almost every illegality deriving from breaking these laws is considered no more than a misdemeanour. So, a relatively soft stance for those that organize illegal tournaments of online poker Minnesota based, for example. At least, compared to other state legislation where some acts are considered outright felonies. This doesn’t make it a haven for real money casinos USA trust worthy Minnesota operators. These are still outlawed, and no such services provider is willing to take a chance.
Also, the rules are quite permissive when it comes to the legal gambling age in Minnesota. This state has a peculiarity regarding what is known as dry casinos, meaning these are establishments that don’t serve alcohol. The minimum age for entering such a venue is 18 while setting to 21 for the alcohol-serving type of place.

Online Gambling Minnesota

As seen before, the laws governing the virtual places of wagering are not as harshas some of the states with a more extreme view propose. But be that as it may, Minnesota online casinos are still a no-go, statewide. Also, the talks for the current casinos MN to auction for state-approved virtual licenses, as is the case in Pennsylvania or West Virginia, to name the latest developments in the market, are still far from becoming a hot topic.

However, this mellow approach of the law-makers, on inflicting punishments, makes other operators, mostly located out of state, to put their services at customers’ disposal. The main software provider that generally takes care of this special category of clients is RealTime Gaming. But this doesn’t mean that there are not a lot of fake accounts out there that aim to fraud people. It’s paramount that the website to be played on is trustworthy. One can brush off this risk by only accessing those sites that are verified, reviewed and recommended like Bovada Casino is. Bovada is legal in Minnesota and it’s our number one choice for all the American gamblers.

Offline Alternatives

Land-based

The number of MN casinos locations goes beyond those found in most states. There are 40 such venues, owned by various Indian tribes, plus two establishments of the “racinos” type. Some are full-grown resorts, Minnesota casinos with hotels and a large number of facilities to entice the players into having a good time, spending money, feeling pampered and then coming back for more with another occasion.
The gaming options on these establishments vary pretty much from one place to another, seeing how, for example Fortune Bay Resort, a casino near Virginia MN, has over 800 slots, but only 4 poker tables and 12 gaming tables, while Mystic Lake Casino Hotel, the largest resort of this sort in the state, contains 4000 slot machines, 78 poker and gaming tables and around 500 bingo seats. Sure, there are also bars and restaurants with no more than 6 gaming machines that make it to the list, as well.

Lottery

Seeing how the prospect of opening new casinos in Minnesota is reduced, the brick-and-mortar market being rather overpopulated, while the Internet betting is unregulated, population turns to other forms of wagering, the lottery being one of those.

Charitable Gaming: Bingo and Electronic Pull-tab Games

A couple of bingo halls are still in business statewide, but most became an unprofitable business after more than one casino in Minnesota provided guests with bingo seats.
However, gambling in Minnesota experienced a rather quirky decision regarding the charitable form. State authorities regulated the insertion of electronic pull-tab games in bar and restaurants for a charitable reason. The purpose was to raise enough capital for the NFL’s local team’s stadium to be built. Unfortunately, at first, the system experienced some troubleshooting, making the overall trust in it to become shaky. Surely, the system managed to recover and raised a good amount of money, but not even close to the provisioned total required. All-in-all, these electronic games were considered a failed attempt and were dismissed.

FAQ
Are betting games legal in MN?

Yes. Minnesota casinos are found in a broad variety, all over the state. There are also two racinos, in addition to the 40 casinos. Is there any legal way to play online poker Minnesota?

Minnesota online casinos’ activity is still considered a grey market, although not explicitly illicit, it’s not regulated as well. Many of the virtual venues give players considerable promotions in the form of bonuses, for first-timers as well as seasoned players, in order to attract customers and keeping them loyal.
